Additional Information

Dr. Furrh is a general psychiatrist currently practicing both at the VA Medical Center in Asheville, NC and in private practice. He is experienced in treating an extensive range of mental health conditions and populations, as well as in the legal setting testifying as an expert witness. Dr. Furrh's clinical background includes inpatient and outpatient experience in the diagnosis and management of psychiatric and neuropsychiatric disorders, with a particular focus on severe mental illness diagnoses, geriatric psychiatry (including dementia and associated issues), addiction, post-traumatic stress disorder (veteran and non-veteran populations), and personality disorders. He possesses expertise in psychopharmacology and psychotherapy, and extensive knowledge regarding other "somatic" treatments (ECT, TMS, ketamine, psychedelics, etc). As a result of his unique clinical background, he has additionally developed a strong knowledge base on the intersection of traditional medicine and psychiatry. Dr. Furrh's forensic experience includes routine testimony as treating psychiatrist (dual agency) for involuntary commitment proceedings, and all the steps in that process (preparing himself and other providers for court, delivering testimony including cross-examination, and negotiating the outcome). He is fortunate to have assisted others with or testified personally in an estimated 75+ individual involuntary commitment hearings. He also has experience working with the incarcerated population and writing legal letters on behalf of patients and for guardianship referrals to adult protective services. In addition to the above, Dr. Furrh has been published, given academic presentations, served in a variety of teaching and leadership roles including in administration, and worked in multidisciplinary treatment settings. Dr. Furrh is board-certified by the ABPN and licensed to practice medicine in North Carolina. He is a member of the AMA, APA, and NCPA.
