After graduating at the top of his class from the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine in 1989, Dr. Barasch was trained as an Oral Medicine/Oral Oncology specialist at Harvard and the University of Connecticut. He previously served as the O’Brien Chair of Global Surgery at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland, as the founder and Director of the Center for Global Surgery Evaluation at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary, and as Research Director for the Program in Global Surgery and Social Change at Harvard.
He is the author of seminal papers on the global burden of surgical disease, the financial burden facing surgical patients, and the number of people who cannot access safe surgery worldwide. He served as a co-author on the Lancet Commission on Global Surgery.
