Capt. Gavan Dunleavy is an active Delaware River docking pilot, maritime consultant, and former U.S. merchant seafarer with over a decade of operational experience involving tanker operations, ship handling, tug/barge operations, and the transportation of crude oil, refined petroleum products, and chemicals. As a harbor docking pilot he conducts docking and undocking operations involving large ocean going vessels including Aframax and Suezmax tankers up to approximately 200,000 deadweight tons, large containerships, bulk carriers, and chemical carriers. His background includes extensive experience in harbor maneuvering, docking operations, Z-Drive tugboat operations, marine casualty analysis, shipyard repair, confined space safety, pollution prevention and vessel operational safety. In addition to active pilotage duties, Capt. Dunleavy provides maritime consulting and expert witness services involving vessel operations, maritime safety practices, ship handling, tug/ship interaction, and operational analysis. He has contributed to multiple maritime industry publications and technical initiatives involving maritime operations, confined space safety, marine coatings and vessel maintenance practices.
