Board-certified emergency medicine physician (ABOEM) and obesity medicine specialist (ABOM) with over 15 years of continuous clinical practice across multiple emergency departments in Mississippi and North Carolina. Currently serving as Emergency Department Director at Baptist Memorial Hospital North Mississippi in Oxford, Mississippi, overseeing clinical operations, quality, and staffing for a high-volume community emergency department with approximately 50,000 annual visits. Dr. Nichols provides independent expert medical review for both plaintiff and defense counsel in matters involving emergency medicine standard of care. Services include comprehensive medical record review, written expert opinions, deposition testimony, trial testimony, and consultation with retaining counsel. He has provided testimony in medical malpractice cases and has been retained as a consultant in matters across multiple states including Tennessee, Georgia, and Alabama. Areas of expertise include emergency medicine standard of care, emergency department triage and systems of care, delayed diagnosis of time-sensitive conditions (stroke, myocardial infarction, sepsis, etc.), advanced practice provider supervision in emergency settings, supervising and collaborative physician oversight, obesity medicine and GLP-1 therapy, and emergency care delivery in rural hospital settings. Dr. Nichols also has developing expertise in correctional healthcare standards and practices. Clinical experience spans leadership and direct patient care roles at multiple facilities. In addition to his Oxford directorship, Dr. Nichols serves as Emergency Department Director at UMMC Grenada (approximately 19,000 annual visits) and UMMC Holmes County (approximately 7,000 annual visits), both rural critical-access emergency departments. He has also practiced at Duke Raleigh Hospital in Raleigh, North Carolina (approximately 50,000 annual visits) and operates an integrated medical clinic and obesity medicine practice in Oxford, Mississippi. Previous experience includes Emergency Department Director at Panola Medical Center in Batesville, Mississippi, and emergency physician roles at Baptist Memorial Hospital Union County and Baptist Memorial Hospital Booneville. Dr. Nichols earned his Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine from Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences and completed his emergency medicine residency at Midwestern University in Chicago, Illinois. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in Biology and Chemistry from the University of Mississippi. Certifications include ATLS, ATLS Instructor, ACLS, PALS, NRP, and BLS-CPR, all maintained continuously. Dr. Nichols was recognized as Preceptor of the Year by the Mississippi College Physician Assistant Program (2025) and is a co-author of a published case report in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology Case Reports on ketamine terminating persistent ventricular tachycardia.
