Stephen Alerhand MD is an Associate Professor of Emergency Medicine at the Rutgers New Jersey Medical School. He serves as Director of the Emergency Ultrasound Division and its Advanced Emergency Medicine Ultrasonography (AEMUS) Fellowship. After his undergraduate graduation from Brown University with an Sc.B. in Neuroscience, Dr. Alerhand completed both his Emergency Medicine Residency and Ultrasound Fellowship at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. He has been bestowed with institutional, regional, and national awards in emergency ultrasound education, including from the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP) and the Society of Academic Emergency Medicine. In addition to Emergency Medicine, Dr. Alerhand is also board-certified in Critical Care Echocardiography (CCeXAM). He has published 50+ peer-reviewed publications in emergency ultrasound and critical care echocardiography. Nationally, Dr. Alerhand serves as Editor-in-Chief for the PEERcert+ QBank and as Review Course Lecturer for the Focused Practice Designation examination in AEMUS. He also serves as Director-at-Large of the Society of Clinical Ultrasound Fellowships. Previously, he served as Secretary of the ACEP – Emergency Ultrasound Section. Internationally, Dr. Alerhand also created and previously directed an annual Critical Care Ultrasound Workshop for the Israeli Association of Emergency Medicine. Given his Spanish language fluency as a first-generation American, he has lectured virtually and in-person to audiences in Mexico, Spain, Peru, Chile, and the Dominican Republic. In addition to his scholarly and clinical work, Dr. Alerhand has also liaised with several AI-based POCUS systems associated with both the education and clinical domains. Due to his breath of publications, he is also sought out as a medical expert reviewer on a variety of cases types.
