Steve is a senior consultant at Group Nine Risk Consulting a firm specializing in security risk management, asset protection, and security training. I joined Group Nine Risk Consulting following a long and successful law enforcement career of 25 years. I retired from the Iowa Department of Public Safety in June 2018. I am board certified in Security Management, having earned a Certified Protection Professional (CPP) certification through ASIS International. The Certified Protection Professional (CPP) demonstrates knowledge and experience in security principles and practices, business principles and practices, investigations, personnel security, physical security, information security, and crisis management and threat assessment and risk analysis. Additionally, I have earned a Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design Professional Designation (CPD) through the National Institute of Crime Prevention. The Professional Designation Certification demonstrates and confirms the expertise in Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) principles, skills, and applications essential for creating a safer, healthier, and more sustainable human environment. I have earned a Workplace Violence Instructor certification through the Center For Personal Protection and Safety (CPPS). The Workplace Violence Instructor Certification demonstrates the knowledge and experience in workplace violence awareness and management awareness for safer work environments. I hold a Associates of Applied Science degree in Criminal Justice and Law Enforcement from Kirkwood College and currently working toward completing a Bachelor of Science of Criminal Justice and Homeland Security at Liberty University, equipping me with with a comprehensive academic foundation in investigative methodologies, homeland security practices, criminal justice system operations, and incident command and emergency planning and incident management. My law enforcement career began in 1995 as a Trooper with the Iowa State Patrol. I served in numerous specialty assignments and duties throughout my career including hostage crisis negotiations, K-9 handler, and the Department of Public Safety's Human Trafficking Initiative and enforcement. The special assignment duties included training state and local agencies and private sector organizations in human trafficking awareness, surveillance and undercover projects as well as traffic enforcement projects while working with the Iowa Division of Intelligence. Throughout my 23-year state law enforcement career, I completed numerous advanced trainings in hostage crisis negotiations, human trafficking enforcement, and criminal and narcotics interdiction. I have experience in security and security guard force protection duties prior to law enforcement. I am a member of ASIS International, InfraGard, Overseas Security Advisory Council, National Apartment Association (NAA), and the National Institute for Crime Prevention (NICP).
