Dr. Gustin has had extensive education, training, and experience as a medical case reviewer and expert witness. He has personally evaluated and analyzed thousands of civil and criminal medical cases for both plaintiff and defendant, and is highly recommended by defense and plaintiff attorneys in civil and criminal actions. Dr. Gustin graduated from the University of Vermont magna cum laude, obtained a Master's degree in Nutrition, Biochemistry, and Metabolism from Goddard College, went to medical school at George Washington University in Washington DC where he distinguished himself as the President of the American Medical Student Association's section on Nutrition, Health Maintenance, and Disease Prevention. He also won the prestigious Joseph Goldberger Scholarship in Cardiology to the National Institutes of Health. After graduation, Dr. Gustin completed his Internship at the University of California, San Francisco (Alameda County Medical Center), and his residency training in Emergency Medicine at New York Medical College (NYC Health & Hospitals -LIncoln Hospital, at the time, the largest Emergency Medicine (EM) training program in the U.S.). During his EM training, Dr. Gustin completed a mini-fellowship in Toxicology at NYU's Bellevue Hospital under the mentorship of Dr. Lewis Goldfrank, Chairman of the American Board of Medical Toxicology. After becoming Board-Certified in EM, Dr. Gustin began his EM practice in the San Francisco Bay Area and has worked as staff and ED Director of trauma centers his entire career. Dr. Gustin's special interest includes all branches of Toxicology. Dr. Gustin has lectured extensively and has published in the area of Toxicology. Dr. Gustin returned to the University of California, Berkeley and to the University of California, San Francisco in 2006 to obtain a Masters in Public Health with a primary focus on Toxicology and clinical research methodology. He finished the Interdisciplinary program with a 4.0 gpa, and during his training published a Public Health Informatics book that was used by the CDC as a template in the early days of the Internet. Dr. Gustin has consulted with the California Department of Health in matters related to Toxicology and food and water outbreak disease (he has published in this area). During his long career, Dr. Gustin has reviewed countless medical-legal cases for defense and plaintiff in EM, all areas of Toxicology including DUI, substance abuse, and in-custody deaths, and has acted as an expert witness on these and other cases related to EM and Public Health, including foodborne and waterborne disease. Dr. Gustin was the Founder and President of AMFS (American Medical Forensic Specialists) a reputable, nationwide medical expert witness company serving the legal community since 1991. Dr. Gustin worked with the Medical Board of California to develop the impartial expert reviewer program that evaluates the care of California physicians charged with neglect. Dr. Gustin has been a Medical Director of the San Francisco-based Rock Med organization since 2008 in charge of coordinating doctors, nurses, and paramedics and ensuring the provision of medical coverage and care at Festival and stadium venues for music and sports in Northern California. The majority of cases treated are alcohol and drug-related; the remainder are EM and urgent care cases. Dr. Gustin presently is on staff at Miami's Baptist Hospital practicing Urgent Care. Dr. Gustin is available to review medical-legal cases for plaintiff and defense attorneys, nationwide. He maintains two offices, one in Napa, California, one in Miami, Florida.
