Natasha Shapiro, MD is a board-certified neonatologist and Assistant Professor of Clinical Pediatrics at Weill Cornell Medical College. She serves as an attending physician in the Division of Neonatology at NewYork-Presbyterian/Queens, where she has practiced since 2016, and since 2024 has been the Director of the Newborn Simulation and Education Program. Dr. Shapiro earned her B.A. from Columbia University and her M.D. from Albert Einstein College of Medicine. She completed her residency in Pediatrics at Yale-New Haven Hospital, followed by a Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine fellowship at NYU Langone Medical Center and a Simulation Education fellowship at Weill Cornell Medicine. She is double board-certified in General Pediatrics (2013) and Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine (2018). Her clinical expertise spans neonatal intensive care, resuscitation, perinatal counseling, breastfeeding education, and healthcare quality improvement. She has spearheaded several innovative programs, including the Neonatal Resuscitation Program curriculum, neonatal mock code training, and the Community Hospital SPRINT project to improve high-acuity procedural skills. She also serves as site principal investigator for major genomic newborn screening studies. Dr. Shapiro’s research interests include neonatal resuscitation, healthcare disparities in periviability counseling, breastfeeding education in the NICU, and the intersection of law and medicine in neonatal care. She has published in leading journals, presented nationally at the American Academy of Pediatrics and Hot Topics in Neonatology, and received multiple honors, including the Alpha Omega Alpha distinction and Best Fellow Abstract Award at Hot Topics in Neonatology. In addition to her clinical and research work, Dr. Shapiro is a dedicated educator. She teaches medical students, residents, and fellows at Weill Cornell Medicine, leads neonatal resuscitation training, and frequently lectures on airway management, implicit bias, and breastfeeding in the NICU. She is an active member of the American Academy of Pediatrics, the American Pediatric Association, the International Pediatric Simulation Society, and the Pediatric Society of Queens, where she currently serves as Vice President. Dr. Shapiro is a Certified Lactation Counselor, NRP Instructor, and holds certifications in PALS, STABLE, TeamSTEPPS, and advanced neonatal resuscitation. She is fluent in Russian and conversant in medical Spanish, enhancing her ability to care for diverse patient populations. Through her leadership in clinical care, education, research, and quality improvement, Dr. Shapiro is committed to advancing neonatal medicine and improving outcomes for vulnerable infants and their families.
