Dr. Jason R. Yanofski, MD, is a board-certified psychiatrist with more than 15 years of clinical and forensic experience across multiple U.S. states and internationally. He is fellowship-trained in both Child & Adolescent Psychiatry (UT Southwestern Medical Center) and Forensic Psychiatry (Yale University), following a psychiatry residency at Johns Hopkins Hospital. He received his medical degree from Drexel University College of Medicine. Dr. Yanofski’s career has spanned some of the nation’s most challenging psychiatric environments. He has served as a staff psychiatrist at Pilgrim Psychiatric Center (New York), Napa State Hospital (California), San Quentin State Prison (California), and the California Health Care Facility. Internationally, he worked as an adult, child, and forensic psychiatrist at the Institute of Mental Health in Singapore, served as a civilian psychiatrist for the U.S. Navy in Japan, and as psychiatry team leader for the U.S. Army in Germany. His broad practice background includes inpatient, outpatient, correctional, and forensic settings, with expertise in high-risk populations and complex diagnostic questions. In his forensic practice, Dr. Yanofski provides expert consultation and testimony for both civil and criminal matters. His areas of expertise include competency to stand trial, criminal responsibility, malingering, psychiatric malpractice, suicide and violence risk, correctional psychiatry, disability evaluations, psychiatric damages, child custody, and independent medical examinations. He is experienced in deposition and trial testimony, as well as in behind-the-scenes consultation for litigation strategy. Dr. Yanofski is also an active educator and author. He has lectured at Yale Law School, presented grand rounds on psychopharmacology and risk assessment, and taught seminars on forensic psychiatry in correctional settings. His publications span topics such as psychiatric malpractice standards, correctional mental health rights, stimulant and antipsychotic prescribing, juvenile competency, and ethical conflicts in child custody disputes. He has authored multiple books, including First Aid for the Psychiatry Boards (McGraw-Hill), First Aid for the Psychiatry Clerkship (McGraw-Hill), and innovative recent works blending psychiatry with education and philosophy. Throughout his career, Dr. Yanofski has been sought out for his ability to clearly explain psychiatric concepts to attorneys, judges, and juries.
