Dr. Alexis J. Carras is a board-certified anesthesiologist with over 25 years of full-time clinical practice and more than 20 years of experience as a consultant and expert witness in anesthesiology. He has reviewed over 75 medico-legal cases and has provided expert testimony in approximately 15 depositions as well as in court. His clinical expertise spans all major subspecialties of anesthesiology, including high-risk surgical settings and outpatient procedures, and he has held multiple leadership positions in his practice as well as at the state level. His recent expert witnessing expertise includes patient selection and preparation, nerve injury, surgical complications, and airway loss. He serves as both a plaintiff and defendant expert. He served as a governor-appointed physician member of the Maryland Board of Physicians from 2013 to 2017, where he participated in licensing and disciplinary oversight. He is currently the Secretary of the Maryland Board of Anesthesiologists. His public service and decades of experience gives him an in-depth perspective on medical malpractice and physician oversight. Dr. Carras is a full partner in a private anesthesiology group and serves as one of a select few Anesthesiologists-in-Charge at Luminis Health Doctors Community Medical Center, where he oversees day-to-day anesthesia operations, coordination of physician and CRNA staff, patient preparation, and problem-solving in a general hospital setting. He practices in multiple hospital and ambulatory surgery centers, where he provides a full complement of general anesthesia services, regional anesthesia, and sedation. He also supervises and mentors CRNAs as well as anesthesia residents and new employees of the practice. Dr. Carras graduated from Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and completed his anesthesiology residency at Johns Hopkins. He has authored multiple peer-reviewed publications and brings extensive experience in clinical judgment, case analysis, and standard of care evaluation to his expert witness work.
