Dr. Francisco Javier Alvarez is a nationally recognized leader in pediatric hospital medicine, with more than two decades of experience in inpatient pediatrics, medical education, healthcare quality improvement, and clinical leadership. His multifaceted career spans academic teaching, hospital leadership, policy development, and medical consulting. He currently serves as Clinical Professor of Pediatrics at Stanford University School of Medicine and as Associate Chief of the Stanford Regional Pediatric Hospital Medicine Programs. In addition, he is the Medical Director of Case Management at Stanford Children's Health | Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital. Dr. Alvarez provides oversight and care in high-acuity inpatient settings, where he integrates clinical excellence with evidence-based approaches to patient management. Prior to joining Stanford, Dr. Alvarez held multiple leadership roles at Children’s National Health System in Washington, D.C., including Medical Director for multiple pediatric hospital medicine programs and Regional Medical Director for Community Hospital Services. His responsibilities included developing hospitalist programs, ensuring high-quality pediatric care in community and regional settings, and collaborating with multidisciplinary teams to improve care transitions and patient safety. Dr. Alvarez earned his Doctor of Medicine from MCP Hahnemann School of Medicine and completed his pediatric residency at Saint Christopher’s Hospital for Children. He is board certified in both General Pediatrics and Pediatric Hospital Medicine. He has completed multiple leadership and quality improvement educational programs, including those at Stanford, the Academic Pediatric Association, and Harvard Medical School. He is fluent in English and Spanish and licensed to practice in California. Dr. Alvarez is a prolific contributor to the advancement of pediatric hospital medicine. He has authored numerous peer-reviewed publications and book chapters on topics including pediatric medication safety, clinical practice guidelines, and hospital quality improvement. His contributions have been widely cited and have helped shape pediatric care practices across the country. He has served as an invited lecturer and mentor at national conferences and academic institutions and has been recognized repeatedly for his excellence in teaching. He is a former Chair of the American Academy of Pediatrics Committee on Guidelines Development, and a frequent leader in national pediatric hospital medicine conferences. Dr. Alvarez has also served as an editor and reviewer for major pediatric journals, including Pediatrics, Hospital Pediatrics, and the Journal of Hospital Medicine. He has received numerous teaching and service awards, including the Stanford Pediatrics Honor Roll and multiple Golden Apple Awards. In addition to his academic and clinical leadership, Dr. Alvarez is available for remote legal consulting services. His areas of expertise include pediatric inpatient care, newborn care, standard of care assessments, quality of care evaluations, case management reviews, and pediatric medication safety. He offers case merit reviews, written expert opinions, and testimony.
