Dr. Keyne Johnson, MD Board-Certified Pediatric and Spine Neurosurgeon Founder & Medical Director, Private Neurosurgery Practice | Winter Park, FL Dr. Keyne Johnson is a nationally recognized board-certified pediatric and spine neurosurgeon with more than 2 decades of experience providing expert care in some of the most complex neurosurgical conditions. She is known not only for her surgical precision, but also for her innovation, compassionate care, and commitment to advancing the field through teaching, mentorship, and product development. Dr. Johnson's journey into neurosurgery began at age 12, when a childhood declaration—“I’m going to be a pediatric neurosurgeon”—was met with her father’s faith-filled response: “You sure can.” That moment sparked a lifelong pursuit that would take her from the University of Pittsburgh, where she completed both her undergraduate and medical degrees, to Duke University, where she became the first Black female neurosurgery resident in the institution’s history. She went on to complete a prestigious fellowship in pediatric neurosurgery at Texas Children’s Hospital, once again making history as the first Black woman to do so. She now practices in Central Florida, where she serves patients from infancy through young adulthood and has brought advanced surgical treatments and novel techniques to the region. Her areas of clinical and surgical expertise include: • Chiari malformations and tethered cord syndrome • Pediatric spinal disorders, including cervical spine fusions and scoliosis • Craniosynostosis and skull deformities • Brain tumors and epilepsy surgery • Spina bifida and myelomeningocele repair • Endoscopic neurosurgery • Cerebrovascular conditions including Moyamoya disease She is also the co-developer of SILC Bands, a scoliosis correction device designed to enhance outcomes in pediatric spine surgery. In addition, she has developed a device for the treatment of plagiocephaly in infants. Dr. Johnson-Nowlin remains active in medical innovation and continues to refine techniques to optimize patient safety and reduce the need for surgical revisions. Her work has been featured in peer-reviewed journals, and she has presented research at national conferences. She has trained and studied internationally, further expanding her expertise and perspective on global neurosurgical practices. She currently serves as clinical faculty at the University of Central Florida College of Medicine, where she mentors future physicians and fosters a passion for neurosurgery among underrepresented students. In 2013, Dr. Johnson founded her private neurosurgery practice in Winter Park, FL, with a vision to return to the roots of personalized, faith-centered care. In addition to her clinical work, she volunteers her time with local organizations and serves on the Board of Directors for Ronald McDonald House Charities of Central Florida. As a medical-legal expert, Dr. Johnson provides clear, comprehensive, and objective reviews and testimony in cases involving pediatric neurosurgery, spine surgery, cranial deformities, Chiari malformation, hydrocephalus, trauma, and surgical complications. She is known for her ability to communicate complex medical concepts in an accessible and compelling manner for attorneys, judges, and juries. She is available for plaintiff and defense cases and holds active medical licenses in Florida, North Carolina, and Pennsylvania.
