Ralph A. Cantafio, Esq. is a nationally recognized legal expert and seasoned attorney with more than 40 years of experience in oil and gas law, energy regulation, surface use and mineral rights, natural resources development, and energy-related litigation and arbitration. He regularly serves as an expert witness, arbitrator, mediator, and subject matter educator in complex disputes involving upstream oil and gas operations, royalty underpayment, lease interpretation, joint operating agreements (JOAs), unitization, permitting, and pipeline routing. Mr. Cantafio is a licensed attorney in Colorado, Oklahoma, Texas, and Wyoming, and has practiced before state and federal courts including the U.S. Courts of Appeals for the Third, Fifth, and Tenth Circuits, and the U.S. Supreme Court. He has served as lead counsel in over 100 jury trials and numerous regulatory and administrative proceedings. His expertise is frequently called upon in matters involving hydraulic fracturing regulation, Senate Bill 181 (Colorado), preemption doctrine, and energy infrastructure permitting. In addition to his legal work, Mr. Cantafio is an accomplished educator. He teaches in the Global Energy Management (GEM) Program at the University of Colorado Denver, where he has twice been named Outstanding Professor. He has also taught energy-related law courses for Colorado Mountain College, Western State Colorado University, and international legal training programs in Nigeria, China, and Canada. Topics taught include: Energy Law: Property, Contracts, and Transactions Environmental and Regulatory Frameworks of Energy Oil and Gas Agreements and Negotiation International Oil & Gas Contracts and Petroleum Economics Mr. Cantafio holds two energy-focused graduate degrees: a Master of Science in Global Energy Management (University of Colorado Denver) and a Master of Science in Mineral Economics (Colorado School of Mines). He also earned a Juris Doctor from the University of Colorado School of Law. His professional credentials include Petroleum Land Management and Energy Finance certificates from the University of Denver and a Colorado real estate license with GRI and SFR designations. His subject matter expertise extends to natural resource valuation, utility easements, condemnation, landowner rights, energy-related real estate transactions, and conservation easements. He has presented and published extensively on lease disputes, Pugh clauses, hydraulic fracturing disclosure, permitting under municipal "home rule" authority, and regulatory compliance in oil and gas operations. Throughout his career, Mr. Cantafio has maintained intermittent membership and involvement in leading professional associations, including: Foundation for Natural Resources and Energy Law (FNREL) Institute for Energy Law (IEL) Energy Bar Association (EBA) Energy and Mineral Law Foundation (EMLF) American Association of Professional Landmen (AAPL) National Association of Royalty Owners (NARO) Independent Petroleum Association of America (IPAA) He also served as a member of the Colorado Supreme Court Hearing Board and the 14th Judicial District Judicial Performance Commission, where he contributed to the integrity and accountability of the legal profession in Colorado.
