Dr. Alexander Axelrad, MD,FACS,FCCM, has been a Trauma/Critical Care surgeon for many years. For approximately twenty years , he has been a Trauma Medical Director. While born in Brooklyn, New York, he was raised and grew up on a poultry farm in central New Jersey. After graduating from Cook College,Rutgers University with a BS degree, he then pursued and received his Master’s Degree at Fairleigh Dickinson University in biology. Afterwards, he completed his medical schooling south of the border at the Autonomous University of Guadalajara, Mexico. Dr. Axelrad then completed his five years of general surgery residency at Maimonides Medical Center in Brooklyn, New York. In 1991, he was accepted and completed a two year fellowship at the University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Hospital in Surgical Critical Care and Trauma Surgery. While in Miami, he was extremely fortunate to have trained under the auspices of Dr.’s Robert Zeppa and Joseph Civetta, both considered giants in the field of trauma and surgical critical care. Dr. Axelrad brings with him a wealth of knowledge and experience in trauma surgery, surgical critical care and as a long standing director of trauma in the very competitive New York metropolitan area. At his most recent employment at NYU Winthrop, he was hired and responsible for taking Winthrop through the vigorous American College of Surgeons process of obtaining Level I Trauma Center verification. It required development of a trauma/critical care research program as well as adaptation and following evidence based medicine guidelines prior to its obtainment of ACS Level I verification. Prior to his stint at Winthrop in Long Island, NY, he was the Trauma Medical Director at Atlanticare Regional Medical Center, Atlantic City, New Jersey. While at Atlantic City, besides leading his trauma team in providing excellent trauma care, he was most proud of facilitating and organizing the annual Trauma and Critical Care Symposium that accommodates annually over 600 people, worldwide. Due to his love of teaching and academia, he also had the opportunity of serving as the Surgical Critical Care Fellowship Program Director at Robert Wood Johnson Medical School in Camden, NJ, while he practiced in the division of Trauma and Surgical Critical Care at Cooper University Hospital. The author of many articles related to critical illness and trauma, Dr. Axelrad is a Fellow of both the American College of Surgeons and the American College of Critical Care Medicine. He is an active member in the American Association for the Surgery of Trauma (AAST), Eastern Association for the Surgery of Trauma and the Society of Critical Care Medicine. Dr. Axelrad’s practice specializes in the care of critically ill and injured patients, the use of thromboelastography in hemorrhage and clotting, chest wall reconstruction after major chest wall injury and the critical care management of severe traumatic brain injury.
