Additional Information

I am currently in full-time practice and a senior partner with a large anesthesia group in Dallas-Fort Worth. My practice consists of a variety of cases, to include almost every subspecialty in anesthesiology. I perform about 1200 anesthetics per year at a variety of facilities, from a small community surgery center to a large Level 1 trauma hospital. Given my experience, there is basically no type of anesthesia case that I am not comfortable reviewing. If you look at the practices of many of the experts who review anesthesia cases, you will find that they practice at academic institutions and have a largely academic practice. On paper, many of these experts are impressive, but their actual day to day practice consists mostly of supervising residents and fellows and they are often out of touch with the standards of care in community practice. Things are very different at a large academic institution and that experience is typically hard to translate to what actually goes on in the community and at busy private institutions. I have gone head to head with many of these experts and find it often easy to tear down their argument on the basis of their lack of experience in private practice anesthesia. I have extensive experience reviewing cases, having reviewed over 100 cases as an expert witness in anesthesia. Many of these cases have gone on to the deposition and trial phase, where I also have experience. In addition to expert witness testimony, I have a great deal of experience in case review as the Chair of the Medical Ethics Committee and a member of the peer review committee at a level 2 trauma center in Arlington, Texas. In these roles, I review well over 50 cases per year. My reviews are very thorough and I dedicate a lot of time and effort in to make sure they are complete, correct and well-written. The attorneys that I have worked with in the past will tell you that I write the best reports of any of their expert witness physicians. In addition to my experience as an anesthesiologist, I trained in neurosurgery and neurocritical care prior to my anesthesia residency. This experience allows me to look at a case not just from the perspective of the anesthesiologist, but as a surgeon as well. In many cases, I have been able to re-direct the focus of the case to the actions of the surgeon and surgical team because I had an understanding of the standards of care for those as well.
