Psychologists and special education teachers actually recommended me as a teenager for a position running a program at Sagamore State Childrens Hospital, a state mental facility, for blind children regressing in the institutional atmosphere. I was nominated for volunteer of the year for Broward County Special Olympics. One reason for the nomination was related to an examination I provided to a 14-year-old blind girl that was withering away in a wheelchair and pretty much ignored by the teachers in the classroom. If the child senses someone was near, she would try to lick them. All of the medical specialists agreed upon a diagnosis of a blind child, unable to hear, speak and braindead. The parents agreed with the diagnosis provided by all the medical specialists. Within 1 minute of my examination, the teachers were in shock. This girl could hear, speak and was far from brain dead. By minute 2 of my examination this young girl was singing the alphabet.
