Additional Information

Gary Fischman is the principal and owner of Future Strategies Solutions LLC. He is a domain specialist in hard materials, specifically ceramics and hard coatings. Dr. Fischman has breadth working in and with academia, industry and government. Dr. Fischman has worked with discovery, written expert reports, been deposed and testified as an expert witness. Formerly, a tenured faculty member at the New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University, Dr. Fischman worked in processing hard, strong materials that ranged from non-oxide semiconductors to oxide ceramics for biomedical applications. During the early years of biomedical applications of materials, Dr. Fischman was front and center developing classes, doing research specifically in hard material (non-oxides) as well as medical oxides (aluminas and zirconias). During that time, he teamed with a colleague and created a small business that made ceramics for biomedical applicationsn (Xylon Ceramic Materials). Dr. Fischman then transitioned to government services, resigned tenure and moved to the US Food and Drug Administration. From within the Center for Devices and Radiological Health, Dr. Fischman worked on issues that ranged from evaluating new devices to working with the Office of Criminal Evaluation on possible issues of tampering Dr. Fischman then moved to the University of Illinois at Chicago where he served as the Director of Biomaterials and Technology with joint appointments in the Departments of Orthopaedic Surgery, Restorative Dentistry and Bioengineering. He also returned to consulting where he was sought as a domain expert in ceramics and an expert witness in the failure of hard medical devices. In 2005, Dr. Fischman was recruited by the US National Academies to become the Director of the National Materials Advisory Board. During his more than 5 years of service he would also add on the responsibilities as the Director for the Board on Manufacturing and Engineering Design and the Board on Infrastructure and the Constructed Environment. In this combined position, he ran the staff for each of these organizations, worked with oversaw the report production in the areas of materials, manufacturing and infrastructure and worked with both the executive and congressional branches of government to develop new activities and funding for those boards. Since leaving the National Academies, Dr. Fischman has been consulting under his own company, Future Stragety Solutions LLC. He has worked predominantly in areas of materials for manufacturing and the IP produced with those materials. He has worked in areas that range from materials for medical devices their assessment and their risks, coating development and assessment , materials for energy, client specifications and supplies issues, national policy with respect to materials and manufacturing As a consultant, Dr. Fischman has also been involved in other activities. In 2013 Dr. Fischman accepted a year-long position as an expert at the National Science Foundation in which managed the Materials and Surface Engineering Portfolio. He also was engaged as the CTO for the Covalent Coatings Company from 2011 – 2020. He has also been involved in advising start-ups. He is currently active in standardization activities. At ASTM, Dr. Fischman serves as the chairperson for F04.13 (Medical and surgical devices and materials – ceramics); and in ISO he serves as the convener for ISO TC 150/WG 12 (Implants for surgery – coatings) and as co-convener for ISO TC 150/SC 1/WG 3 (Implants for surgery – materials – ceramics). Dr. Fischman is a Fellow of the American Ceramic Society as well as the National Institute of Ceramic Engineers. Dr. Fischman was a board member of the American Ceramic Society and ABET Int’l. His awards include the PACE (Professional Achievement in Ceramic Engineering), the Friedberg lecture from the ceramics community and the Patrick G. Laing award from the medical standards community.
