Dr. CM Schade, MD, PhD, PE is a nationally recognized and sought-after clinician, speaker, and expert witness with 35+ years of pain medicine experience. With his dual training as both a physician and an engineer, Dr. Schade is a sought-after expert witness in medical-legal matters on the local and national stage, where he combines unique expertise with the overlap of medicine, bioengineering, and medical artificial intelligence (AI). He is a seasoned medical-legal expert and has been involved in over 100 cases ( plaintiffs (60%) and the defense (40%)). He has qualified as an expert witness in both state and federal courts. He has authored over 100 expert reports and testified under oath at depositions and trials in state & federal courts. Dr. Schade’s 35+ years of forensic experience includes medical malpractice, complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) litigation, spinal cord stimulation litigation, medical device-related litigation, pain and suffering, opioid overdoses, including the current epidemic of illegally manufactured fentanyl deaths, future medical and disability claims, and fraud and abuse related to billing and coding, having authored many billing controverting affidavits. Judges have told Dr. Schade that he was the most outstanding testifying expert they had ever heard because of his ability to combine medical expertise, training, and experience with the scientific literature using straightforward and logical engineering-based analysis and presentation. Dr. Schade completed PhDs in electrical engineering and computer science/artificial intelligence at Stanford University. Dr. Schade taught electrical engineering at Stanford University and the United States Air Force Academy, While at the United States Air Force Academy, he worked on instrumentation for space deconditioning for the Apollo and Skylab programs. This experience motivated him to attend medical school at the University of Miami’s Ph.D. to MD program. Subsequently, he was the United States Air Force Surgeon General’s consultant in Nuclear, Chemical, and Biological (CBW) warfare while teaching flight surgery medicine at the School of Aerospace Medicine. Dr. Schade is board-certified by six professional boards: Anesthesiology, Pain Management/Medicine, Interventional Pain Practice, Integrative Pain Management, Interventional Pain Physicians, and Disability Analyst. He also has expertise in addiction medicine and substance use disorder. Dr. Schade’s two primary specialties are testifying about complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS/RSD) and spinal cord stimulator systems' engineering and therapeutic complexities. Dr. Schade has several decades of experience as the medical director of CARF-certified rehabilitation facilities for rehabilitating chronic pain patients, including complex regional pain syndrome. He has been an invited speaker on complex regional pain syndrome and spinal cord stimulators. Dr. Schade’s experience in spinal cord stimulation includes decades of experience in implanting and managing spinal cord stimulators, and he has published several essential scientific papers on the mechanisms of action of spinal cord stimulator systems. Dr. Schade is the immediate past Presiding Officer of the TX State Board of Pharmacy’s PDMP Advisory Committee and past president of the Texas Pain Society (TPS). He is an emeritus member of the TPS Board of Directors. He has decades of experience advocating for Pain Medicine at the TX Legislature, representing the Texas Medical Association and the TPS.
