Dr. Linda van Roosmalen brings over 25 years of experience in wheelchair transportation safety as a designer and researcher at the University of Pittsburgh. She is a key member of a select group of experts dedicated to researching Wheelchair Transportation Safety. Over the past two decades, Dr. van Roosmalen has been retained by both plaintiff and defendant councils, providing her expertise in various cases, including: • Wheelchair transport safety on school buses, public buses, paratransit, non-emergency transport, private vehicles, rail systems, and airplanes. • Lift and ramp access. • Securement of wheelchairs and scooters, along with associated labeling. • Seat belt restraints for wheelchair-seated occupants and related labeling. • Accessibility for wheelchair users in various environments, such as sidewalks, crosswalks, bathrooms, amusement parks, and public vehicles. With a strong background in Industrial Design Engineering and a decade of industry experience, Dr. van Roosmalen extends her expertise to medical device design and compliance. Her specific competencies include: • Device human factors and ergonomics, covering medical devices, injector systems, drug/device combination devices, device labeling, instructions for use, and intra-uterine devices (usability, safety, comfort, regulatory compliance). • In-depth knowledge of medical device regulations and their application to safety and effectiveness for use (IEC62366). In summary, Dr. Linda van Roosmalen is a highly qualified expert witness with a Ph.D. in rehabilitation science and technology, as well as a B.S. and M.S. in industrial design engineering. Her international publications and multiple patents on wheelchair safety technology and medical device innovation attest to her expertise. Dr. van Roosmalen has not only educated and trained others on wheelchair safety but has also designed electrical mechanical systems to enhance accessibility and transportation safety. She played a pivotal role in ANSI RESNA and ISO standards committees, co-authoring wheelchair standards on public transportation safety. As the Principal and founder of LINC Design LLC, Dr. van Roosmalen has conducted in-vehicle investigations and created training materials for major insurance underwriters of wheelchair-accessible paratransit systems. With over 20 years of accessible transportation experience in both private and public sectors, she is well-versed in safety systems and standards relevant to accessible transportation. During her tenure as Innovation Lead and Human Factors Director in the industry, Dr. van Roosmalen directed the human factors engineering team and was responsible for usability engineering and regulatory compliance of medical devices and software at a large pharmaceutical company. Dr. van Roosmalen is a named inventor on nine utility patents, a recipient of two innovator awards, and currently serves as the Communications Chair of the Human Factors Engineering Society in the Forensics Professional Group.
