After attending Claremont McKenna College, he received a direct commission into the US Army to attend the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences. His post-graduate medical education included training at Madigan Army Medical Center, Walter Reed Army Medical Center, National Naval Medical Center, Armed Forces Medical Examiner System, and Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, State of Maryland in Baltimore. His job titles have included Staff Pathologist at Madigan Army Medical Center; Chief of Pathology at Martin Army Community Hospital in Fort Benning Georgia; Deputy Medical Examiner, Regional Medical Examiner, and Director of the Office of the Armed Forces Medical Examiner in the Armed Forces Medical Examiner System. During his military career, he was awarded the “A” Proficiency Designator, Order of Medical Military Merit (O2M3), Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Joint Service Commendation Medal with one oak leaf cluster, Meritorious Service Medal with one oak leaf cluster, and Army Superior Unit Award among others. He graduated from the Army Medical Department’s Intermediate Level Education and Medical Management of Biological and Chemical Casualties Course. He retired from active duty with over 23 years of service. He is board certified in anatomic, clinical, and forensic pathology and carries medical licensure in 9 states. He has performed over 2500 autopsies in his career, including over 400 homicides. He has multiple publications and numerous presentations at international conferences. He recently received the FBI Director's Award for Outstanding Criminal Investigation for 2022. He currently lives in Texas with his family, working as a full-time Deputy Chief Medical Examiner, working as a locums (part-time) forensic pathologist in several jurisdictions, and managing his forensic consulting company.
