Dr. Kohler is a residency trained, board certified emergency physician with a nearly 30 year of clinical practice at a high volume, high acuity tertiary care medical centers in Tucson AZ, and San Diego, CA. He was appointed and has served as both Assistant Chief and Chief of his emergency department as well as serving as the hospital Emergency Management Chair and ED delegate to the hospital Bioethics Committee. After many years of reviewing cases for the Emergency Department, Hospital Peer Review and Quality Improvement committees, he was appointed as founding core faculty to establish an Emergency Medicine Residency Program at his medical center. Among other duties, he was tasked with creating the Quality Improvement, Patient Satisfaction and Risk Management curricula for the residency program, which included a novel collaboration with University of San Diego School of Law to integrate medical malpractice didactics between emergency medicine residents and law students. He is listed as an expert medical reviewer for the Medical Board of California. His clinical practice included bedside teaching of residents and medical students. He is an expert public speaker, having delivered lectures on multiple topics as part of his clinical and administrative roles. He has received multiple commendations for quality of care and patient satisfaction from both his medical group as well as peers in the community. He recently stepped away from clinical work and he currently has an active consulting practice as an emergency medicine expert witness for several ongoing cases, including preparation of reports, notarized affidavits, and testimony in depositions and mediation hearings. He also serves as the emergency medicine service line lead for MD for Patients and MD for Accuracy, providing second opinion and pre-litigation chart review services.
