Dr. Geis is an experienced clinician, researcher, medical school professor and forensic expert--with a career that spans more than 40 years. He holds a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from the University of Kansas. He did a clinical internship in the Psychiatry Department of Indiana Medical School and a two-year Post-Doctoral Fellowship at the Menninger Foundation, which is now in collaboration with Baylor Medical School in Houston, Texas. For 41 years, he has been engaged in a range of clinical and administrative activities, including teaching and researching as a Psychiatry Professor, Director of Behavioral Research, and as the Clinical Director of a 20,000-patient mental health center. His direct clinical experience includes over 55,000 therapy hours in a wide array of therapeutic modalities. He has been a successful researcher (over $12.5 million dollars) and recently has focused on suicide assessment and intervention, substance abuse and early life trauma. Recently he has trained over 10,000 clinicians in suicide care and has been the Clinical Division Director of the American Association of Suicidology. He has done over 100 invited clinical addresses in the past decade. He was the Chief Clinician of the Enhanced Suicide Care Academy in Kansas City for three years and, in recent years, has been invited to do clinical talks throughout the United Sates, Asia, Canada, Europe and South America. In 2024, he was tapped as a "Legend of Psychology" by West Coast University for a video series on Enhanced Suicide Care. He is the co-founder of a 20-year-old non-profit suicide prevention organization--the Kansas City Suicide Awareness and Prevention Program. He is a Certified Psychological Autopsy Investigator, awarded by the American Association of Suicidology. He has been designated as one of the top three psychologists in Kansas City Missouri each year for the past ten years. He has done over 50 consultations with different organizations over the years, including, currently, a consultation with the First Responder Network, a California-based organization to provide trauma support to community first responders in multiple states. His career as a forensic expert includes over 800 consultations in the areas of suicide standard of care, personal injury and emotional distress, priest abuse, false confession, competency, criminal responsibility, and sexual harassment. His extensive teaching and clinical training expertise enhances his ability to provide competent and non-jargon-filled depositions and court testimony. He prizes the opportunity to communicate effectively with juries of different backgrounds. He is an expert in using psychological tests in a forensic context (MMPI, TSI, DAP, VIP, etc.), and he has done over 100 depositions and trial and sentencing testimonies over his long career. He is credentialed to provide clinical teletherapy services in 42 states as part of the Psychology Interjurisdictional Compact (PSYPACT).
